7 Reason to NOT Go to the People’s Market

The Jackson Hole People’s Market seems like a great way to spend a Wednesday night. Local food, beer on tap and live music. After doing very little research we have found that the People’s Market is, in fact, not fun at all. Here is why.

Reason # 1 – Local beer only
IMG_2736It seems crazy that in this day in age people are still drinking good beer. The fact that you can’t fill up your mug with a Bud Light on the rocks is barbaric.

Reason # 2 – All the food is fresh

Last I checked there were no astronauts coming back to earth just to get fresh food. As the number one perk to being in space is the food it would follow logic that, given the choice, we should be eating freeze dried ice cream sandwiches every day. There are no freeze dried ice cream space sandwiches at the People’s Market. Bull$#!&.

Reason # 3 – Too many bikers

Jackson is seeing all time traffic congestion highs as you read this. And “locals” that are “biking” to the “farmers market with a happy hour” are clogging our lungs with clean air and giving us less traffic to yell at during rush hour. Remember, you’re not in traffic – you are traffic. And nobody likes a quitter.

Reason # 4 – Bike-in movies are free

IMG_2897Speaking of biking – the movie watching experience should revolve around spending $30 on a ticket, popcorn and a soda. Here you hang out on you own favorite blanket, and drink stupid local craft beer (see above).  Disgusting.

Reason # 5 – You have to meet your farmer

IMG_2974 Not sure about you but we enjoy a healthy disconnect in our food supply. At the People’s Market you actually have to see the super rad farmer behind the food you eat. They were probably playing in dirt all morning too. Yuck!

Reason # 6 – The market supports the local economy

When you purchase something at the market, that means a local farmer or vendor can go sailing in Mexico for a vacation or even worse – send their children to college to drink beer and chase (wo)men. If you’re like us, and want all of the dollars to go OUT of the Jackson area, go to “Shmar-shmucks” instead of the Market and send your dollars to Seattle. Don’t forget to leave your reusable coffee mug at home either.

Reason # 7 – The live music is loud

IMG_2064 It is a scientific fact that live music is louder than no music. You can’t argue science.

There you have it.  The worst event in Jackson, every Wednesday 4-7 all summer long. And we’ll see you there 😉

A Note from the People’s Market Founder

When I first started the People’s Market in 2010 one of our lovely local farmers told me after a slow day at the Market, that it would take four years for the market to gain traction.

Jed, you were right! Last year was our fourth year and the People’s Market turned the corner. With our success last year I have decided that it is time to pass the baton to a new energetic group to run the Market. I have full confidence that this group will not only run the Market well, but that they will be able to take it to the next level. We have strived from the beginning to be a vendor run market and I’m excited to have two of our vendors as part of this group.

My Wife, Sara and I will be trading the Tetons for the Cascades this summer. We want to thank all of the vendors, volunteers and locals that have made the People’s Market into the community hang-out spot on Wednesday nights. We had so much fun spending time with all of you week after week. We will be thinking of you this summer as we turn our heads towards the East every Wednesday night.

We will be having a farewell party at The Bird Monday June 16th at 6:30pm.

Love – Steve & Sara

Iron Chef Competition!

Jackson Hole People’s Market 3rd Annual Iron Chef Competition
Wednesday, September 11th 4-7pm

The Jackson Hole People’s Market will be holding its 3rd Annual Iron Chef Competition onWednesday, September 11th from 4pm to 7pm. The Competition will be held at the People’s Market located at the base of Snow King Mountain.

Clark “Porky” Myers & Mike “Lenny” Britton will be defending Couloir Restaurant’s title against other local valley chefs. Each team will have two chefs working together to create a unique dish using three local secret ingredients. The chefs will not find out the secret ingredients until they start cooking. They will then be given 10 minutes to prepare a menu and one hour to create their dish. Each dish will be judged on taste, presentation and originality. The challengers for the event will be Fine Dining Group, Chefs, Joel Tate & Matt Melehes, Snake River Grill, Chefs, Kyle Nicholson & Brian Laughlin and representing the private chef sector of Jackson will be Jarrett Schwartz and Eric Wilson.

One twist this year will be the addition of a beer paring with each chef’s dish.  Each chef will be given three beers each from Roadhouse Brewing and Snake River Brewing.  The chef will then select the beer they wish the judge to drink with their dish.

The judges for the event will be Pete Wakine (Bar Manager at the Spur), Audrey Smith (President Slow Foods in the Tetons), Annie Fenn (Board Member Slow Foods in the Tetons) & Cara Rank (Dishing JH). The People’s Market will be holding a silent auction for the public to bid on becoming a judge for the competition or to get a plate of food from a chef of their choice. The Jackson Hole People’s Market is an ongoing program of Slow Foods in the Tetons. The event is sponsored by The Murie Center, Snake River Grill, Fine Dining Group, Cosmic Apple Gardens, Snowdrift Farms, Couloir Restaurant, Snake River Brewing, Roadhouse Brewing, St. John’s Hospital & Aspens Market.
